What Is a Box Sash Window?

A traditional box sash window has two sashes that slide vertically within a timber box frame. Cords and pulleys connect each sash to concealed counterweights, so the sashes balance and move smoothly with very little effort. This is the construction found on many period homes and it is the one most often chosen when authenticity matters.

Our box sash windows can be made with slim double-glazed units and slender glazing bars so that the proportions and sightlines stay true to the original design, while thermal and acoustic performance is improved.

Box Sash or Spring-Balanced Sash Windows?

Box sash windows use cords, pulleys and weights. They offer the most authentic appearance and operation and suit properties where a full box frame can be accommodated.

Spring-balanced sash windows keep the look of a traditional sash but use modern spiral balances in place of weights. They are suitable where there is not enough depth in the opening for a full box frame.
